Where we work in St James's

Our round covers Jermyn Street and Duke Street, King Street and Bury Street, St James's Street and the courts off it, Pall Mall and the streets behind it down to St James's Square.

The work splits roughly in two. There are the apartments, usually upper-floor, usually compact for the money, often reached through a shared street door with a retail or gallery unit at ground level. And there is the commercial work: galleries, small offices and consulting rooms that want cleaning before the district opens.

What makes St James's different to clean

Discretion is a working requirement rather than a nicety. A gallery hanging a show, a club with members on the premises and a private flat on the floor above have very little in common except that none of them want a cleaner visible during their hours.

Art is the risk that makes this area distinct. Where there are hung works, the checklist states plainly what is not to be touched, what is dusted and by whom, and where our remit stops. We would rather lose that part of the job than take a cloth to something irreplaceable.

The buildings are old and layered. A Georgian shell with a twentieth-century shopfront, a lift added in the 1960s and a bathroom from last year is normal here, and it means surfaces of four different eras in one flat.

Access, parking and keys

St James's is inside the Congestion Charge zone: £18 a day since 2 January 2026, Monday to Friday from 7am to 6pm and noon to 6pm at weekends. It is inside the ULEZ. Both sit inside your monthly figure.

Westminster parking controls run Monday to Saturday, 8:30am to 6:30pm, and much of the area is single yellow or permit bay throughout. Visits are on foot or by a single drop outside controlled hours.

Where a building has a porter or a gallery has its own security, access is arranged through them and signed for. We do not improvise this on the morning.
